The Water Is Wide

from It Is Time by Ginger Ackley

/

about

The Water Is Wide is a traditional song – actually related to Child Ballad 204, Jamie Douglas and another version, Oh, Waly, Waly. The beautiful Irish song "Carrickfergus" is also based on it. Many of my generation were introduced to this beautiful ballad back in the wonderful days of the Folk Music Scene, when such names as Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez (among many) became icons of a generation. It was also a great piece to have in the repertoire of young college students, and I have been singing it ever since!

lyrics

The water is wide, I cannot cross o'er
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that can carry two
And both shall row, my love and I

Well, love is gentle and love is kind
A little time while it is new
But love grows old and waxes cold
And fades away like the morning dew.

I leaned my back against an oak
And thought it was a trusty tree
But first it bent and then it broke
So did my love prove false to me.

There is a ship and she sails the sea
She's loaded deep as deep can be
But not as deep as the love I'm in
I know not if I sink or swim.
