Bonnie Green

from It Is Time by Ginger Ackley

/

about

The story that Bonnie Green tells is of a time when young men often had to leave to fight for their homes and land – though that hasn't changed too much today. Back in that time, though, it wasn't always the ones who fought who lost their life. There were illnesses and such that struck the loved ones back home, and it was the young soldier who was left with the sadness.

A behind the scenes note: The writing of this song was quite an experience for me. I had an early morning music appointment and had practiced hard all evening. I made myself lie down to sleep around midnight. However, at 1 in the morning, I woke up with this beautiful tune flowing through my head from a dream! I HAD to get up and write it down so I wouldn't lose it - then the words started to flow, and I was trying to write music with one hand and lyrics with the other! It only took about 15 minutes or so, then I played it and fell asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow. My youngest daughter said, "I love it, Mom! But it is so sad!" - and it does seem to touch the heart whenever I play it!

lyrics

I am sorry for the time that has gone by
And the way that memory can make us cry
And I'm sorry for the nights we'll never share
But within our dreams, my love and I are there.

We would walk together down the bonny green
Through the forest and across the mountain stream
And our hearts were innocent of worldly care
For our love was true. Its passion we did share.

Then I heard the call to gather and defend
And I told her as I left that love won't end
Even though the distance seems so very far
I'd return and we'd be just the way we are.

Now, a letter I am holding in my hand
And it tells me what I cannot understand
How my love is sleeping 'neath the bonny green
She will never more upon this earth be seen.

Oh, I'm sorry for the time that has gone by
And the way that memory can make us cry
And I'm sorry for the nights we'll never share
But within our dreams, my love and I are there.
